The Cost of Living at the Heart of the Midterm Campaign
With the midterm election season winding down, one issue dominates every conversation: the soaring cost of living. We spoke with voters in six critical swing states—Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, and Georgia—and the message is clear: many feel "nobody's listening" in Washington.
1. "Nobody's Listening" — What Voters Say
Across states, voters express frustration that political rhetoric in D.C. feels disconnected from daily reality. Inflation may be cooling in reports, but at the grocery store and gas pump, prices remain stubbornly high. A Pennsylvania small business owner put it simply: "We don't need economic theory; we need relief now."
2. A Nationwide, Not Local, Problem
This isn't isolated to one state. From Florida to the Midwest, the gap between official inflation data and real-world experiences is wide. While CPI shows moderation, essentials like food, housing, and transportation continue to strain household budgets.
3. Impact on Local Races
Candidates leaning into pocketbook issues are gaining traction. Voters in swing districts are prioritizing concrete price-reduction plans over abstract economic growth metrics.
4. Media Perspectives Across the Spectrum
The New York Times labels this the defining midterm concern. CNN presents five charts mapping the U.S. economic reality under Trump's second term. The Guardian breaks down why America can't tame inflation in seven charts. The Globe and Mail adds a Canadian perspective on cross-border price pressures.
5. Key Takeaways
As the midterms approach their close, both politicians and business leaders must bridge the gap between macro data and Main Street reality. Voters are demanding accountability, not just optimism.
