Archive of Our Own Could Go Dark for 4 Weeks

The popular fan fiction repository Archive of Our Own (AO3) has announced it will be offline for up to four weeks due to essential maintenance. The news has sent ripples through the global community of writers and readers who rely on the platform for storing, sharing, and discovering fan-created content.

Why the Extended Downtime? According to the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), which runs AO3, the shutdown is necessary to perform critical server upgrades, enhance data encryption, and roll out long-requested features. The team emphasized that while the wait is long, the improvements will make the platform more robust and secure for years to come.

Community Impact Writers face a temporary halt in publishing new works, while readers lose access to their favorite archives. In response, many fans are turning to alternative platforms like Wattpad or AO3 mirrors, and engaging in real-time discussions on Twitter and Discord to fill the void.

How to Prepare - Download or backup important stories locally - Follow OTW's official social channels for real-time updates - Explore other fan fiction communities during the outage - Participate in community-driven Q&A sessions about AO3's future roadmap
